Welcome back to another school year, MS4 and MS5 Learning Partners!

Congratulations again to all of last year’s IGCSE Business Studies Learning Partners for the impressive exam marks. I’m proud of you all!

I’m so glad that so many Learning Partners have chosen Business Studies as one of their IGCSE subjects this year (11 out of 14!) and am very excited to get started with it. I feel it is an extremely beneficial curriculum no matter what type of field or career you want to work toward.

We will be beginning the 2nd year of the IGCSE curriculum with Finance and Accounting, so a great deal a learning lies ahead!

IGCSE Business Studies Expectations Term 2

Important Notice: At ISN we value the input of our learning partners, these expectations will be constantly updated to include learning partner ideas into the curriculum.

Expectations:
(a)   Learning partners will review and expand on their knowledge of Marketing. They will:
(i)   Comprehend various pricing methods and strategies.
(ii)   Identify factors that influence supply and demand, be able to graph supply and demand, and determine price elasticity.
(iii)   Understand the role of promotion, including advertising, promotional strategies, personal selling, and public relations.
(iv)   Comprehend various factors of advertising, such as media types and the advertising process.
(v)   Discuss the need for a marketing budget, and be able to draw up a marketing plan.
(vi)   Appreciate the importance of place and distribution channels, understand the role of wholesalers, and select suitable methods of distribution and transportation of a product.

(b)   Learning partners will review and expand on their knowledge of Production. They will:
(i)   Understand how to measure productivity given output, input, and number of employees.
(ii)   Explain the different methods of production and when each should be used given unique situations.
(iii)   Understand quality assurance and management.
(iv)   Be aware of the implications of new technology in business.
(v)   Identify the factors that influence choosing the location of a manufacturing, retailing, or service sector business.

(c)   Learning partners will review and expand on their knowledge of People and Work. They will:
(i)   Comprehend what is meant by motivation, and explain motivation theories including Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and other theories from Frederick Herzberg and Douglas McGregor.
(ii)   Apply appropriate ways to pay different types of jobs.
(iii)   Understand the reasons why people work, involving financial and non-financial motivators, and how to increase job satisfaction.
(iv)   Explain different types of leadership style, and comprehend the difference between formal and informal groups.
(v)   Understand the different duties of the Human Resources department.
(vi)   Be able to draw up a job description and specification, a CV and application form, an advertisement for a vacancy, interview questions, and an induction programme.
(vii)   Understand government legislation on the recruitment process.
(viii)   Evaluate the relevance of training for all levels of employees.
(ix)   Understand collective bargaining, the role of employers’ associations, why workers join trade unions, and what forms of industrial action are used by trade unions.

IGCSE Business Studies Final Exam

Hello,

Here is some important information regarding the IGCSE Business Studies final exam. It will take place Friday, December 12th from 1:15-3:45. The following chapters will be covered: Chapter 1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18 and 19.

The test will contain two parts, with each part worth 50% and allowing 1 hour 15 minutes. The first part will cover short answer questions and multiple choice. The second part will be a case study.

Event Planning!

The IGCSE Business Studies LP’s are really enthusiastic about their next project, which involves planning an event. They are beginning to study the basics of Marketing, and are incorporating the four P’s of the Marketing Mix: Product, Price, Promotion and Place. Don’t be surprised if you are invited to a special event from them in the near future!

Welcome back from the nice, long break! The IGCSE Learning Partners will have their second assessment of the year next Friday, October 31st. This test will cover Chapters 1-3 and 10-12 with a larger focus on the last three chapters. Good luck!

Biofuels vs. Food Production

Learning Partners have been studying the supply chain in IGCSE Business Studies the past week. We discussed why increased prices in the primary sector influences everyone down the line to the consumer. We also discussed the production of biofuels and natural foods and the pros and cons of each. LP’s were broken into two groups and each group took turns trying to convince me, as a make believe land owner, to sell my land to their company. In the end, the food production group beat the biofuels group! However, there will be a last chance for rebuttal in class on Friday. Stay tuned!

IGCSE Business Studies

Hello,

This site will be used for IGCSE level Business Studies, and will not have information for Business Studies for MS1 – 3. I apologize for any confusion!

MS4 Learning Partners are already busy with their first presentations of the term. We had a great discussion about athletes and the endorsements they get, why companies choose athletes to represent their brand, and if certain athletes influence your decision to purchase a product. LP’s are researching famous athletes, analyzing the endorsements they have received, and will be presenting their findings on Tuesday.
